Merlin Vision. Any good?

I'm in the process of looking to buy a new Compound Bow. I have a limited budget of about £300. So It's either a used Hoyt of some kind or a new Merlin Vison.

I am left handed so my choice is limited on the second hand market. Left hand bows are like hens teeth. This kind of forces my hand to look to the new market. On paper the Merlin looks like it may be OK. Has anyone had any experience of this bow, or any Merlin.

Cheers

Rich

PS. Just rang Bowsports, the word "left hand" met with the usual sucking of air between the teeth. They don't have one in stock anyway....I may have to take up golf.

In the last series of Top gear Jeremy Clarkson asked "Do you have a quality car or a French one"

IMHO "do you want a quality bow or a M......".:cheerful:

In all seriousness though, and referring to my thread "You cant buy points". You will shoot best with the bow that fels right and you are confident with. I suggest you find some way of trying what you intend to purchase before making any decisions.

This is near impossible with a left hand bow. The Merlin is out anyway as they don't have any left. It's going to be a waiting game for a Hoyt, I like all of those.

The left handed Hoyt compounds are "on the way" apparently they have to fulfil the right hand market first but they are definately on the way. Check out the new Bow Tech Allegiance, you won't buy a Hoyt!!

The Bow Tech is a bit out of my price range just now, but given choice it would be on the top of my list, cheaper and arguably better than the Hoyt stuff. if looks are anything to go by they look fast doing nothing..

both me and my eldest lad shoot merlin compounds and i cant fault them both in terms of bow and after sales service it helps because i dont live too far away from them but when i go there they are genuinely helpful and nothing seems too much trouble i know they are pushed at the moment but they do have some second hand bows in and both mine and my lads bows were made up as we wanted them.

i dont know much about archery as i am a relatively new but they have helped me and i dont like to think i am a fool

Hey Mr Eagle you may have something here. Bowsports are a bit cheaper. I have checked out the Diamond web site. hmmm. They look too good to be true. I have PM's Marcus for some input on these. I'm sure he has some experience of them. I wonder if the twin cam version is better than the single?

Cheers for that.

When I tried the solo cam it was wonderful! The twin cam was a bit "spongy", like the Hoyts, and you can alter the let off on the solo cam! We have a junior shooting a solo cam and he is doing very well!

Are they a credible competitive bow. Considering I have aspirations to go for MB this year. is this kind of bow up to the job?

In my most humble opinion the diamond will be more than adequate for MB scores. I am more than pleased with my BowTech Old Glory.

Have you seen one, what is the build quality like? Why are they so well priced?

As I understand it Diamond is a Bowtech brand and the bows are basically last years models with rubber grips, but essentially the same build quality.

My son bought one of these (solo cam) about six weeks ago after shooting recurve. Neither of us are experts on compound bows but it's fantastic for the price. Diamond seem to have made the economies on the cosmetics, it hasn't got lots of shiny bits or a flash paint job but it shoots like a dream and is one of the quietest compounds around. I too looked at the specs on 'economy' bows before we bought it and it did seem too good to be true but so far we are delighted with it.

Rich, suggest you do a ring-round of all the major archery shops and see what they have. One of the juniors in our club is left handed and just picked up an excellent used 2005 Ultratech from Wales Archery Specialists (01291 420321) - he's a big junior, by the way, 14 years old and touching 6 foot, so his requirements would probably be similar to yours.

I think that provided you go with a cam of adjustable draw length (Hoyt cam & 1/2 for instance) you should find a few bows out there.

Hi Adam,

That's the plan. I have a few contacts who may have Hoyts available, It all depends on the sale of my bow. It's not looking so good at the moment. Patience is some thing I'm going to need a lot of. It would be nice to get something sorted before the outdoor season kicks in. Just now this is quite a big investment, I don't just a have a bow to fund, I need new arrows too..oh well.

Cheers, Rich
