How To Make Footed Arrow Shafts?

I am going to make myself a Yumi Bow, and I will be able to draw to about 38 inches.

So I need arrows upto 40 inches long.

I can only get arrow shafts upto 33 inches long, so I was thinking of footing them to make them longer.

I don't have a clue how it's done so can someone help me out.

Thankyou

Dan

Howdy,

The Bowyers Bible vol3 (i think) has a section on footing arrows... and Vol-1 if my addled brain serves me right.

If you haven't already got these they are very good...

Google is your friend...
Archers Review: Footing Jig Review

Don't think i could actually do a 'simple' footing like that... i'd go for the V footing (wedge and taper) but each to their own.

Summary...
1) Plane one end to a 'v' taper.
2) Cut a slot in othe end
3) Clamp at slot end to stop splitting
4) Insert 'v' into slot with glue and clamp, adjust re clamp
5) plane it all nice and round

I practiced on some off cuts and made a decent job... but decided the reward wasn't worth the investment. :)

Or make your own... for ?20 you can buy a 'Veritas' dowel maker... i have a couple of these (1/2"a nd 3/8") and from Ash planks (cut square) whizz these through the dowel maker with a leccy drill... simples! :)

The Veritas jig will have paid for itself after a dozen arrows! :)

Good Luck

I would have thought you would shoot bamboo shafts?
they come in 4-5-6-7-8ft lengths! literally the ones from the garden centers even :)
like the look of the yumi bows though-pulling one of them out at your club should raise some eyebrows lol!
Good luck though :)
