First year as a longbow (wo)man

I've just about completed my first year with a longbow. I've taken part in my club's Frostbite, Armerican, and National competitions. I'm also the only woman shooting longbow at my club. To top if all off I've just learned that I've earned my 1st class badge with the longbow scores. Not bad for a 50+ yo who's only been shooting for 2 years.

I'm shooting a 40lb bow at the moment but am awaiting a phonecall to tell me that my new 50lb bow has arrived in store and is ready to collect.

It's strange but I don't mind hitting green when I shoot longbow (I think two of us are competing for who gets the most greens). At least the ground around and behind our target is well aerated. I'm better in the field shoot with the longbow as well. I think I've found my favourite bow.

Aerated! I'm stealing that one for when my 12 and a half dozen sighters excuse runs out.

I've only recently joined the ranks of the longbow, but it's great fun isn't it? Congrats on getting to 1st class. What bow have you gone for for your 50lber?

that should do you well at the longer distances and clout, stick with the 40lb bow for the bulk of your target archery though or you may end up with a shoulder injury if you overexert yourself.

You get the added bonus of sorting out a nice shiny new set of arrows to go with the new bow too - extra archery shopping, what could be better?

Thanks Karl, I'd forgotten about that. What more could a girl want? A new bow AND more shopping! Shiny new arrows - check.

I picked up the bow on Thursday; it's beautiful. I'd forgotten how bright the yellow wood is when it's new. Now I've got to 'teach' it to shoot. Hopefully it won't be too windy at the club today so I can take it there, brace it and make it watch some other archers shooting ;).

Thank you Pip Bickerstaffe and team for producing another wonderful bow. I'm really looking forward to shooting it.

Heehee. I love that comment.
My bow teaches me how to shoot!
It says things like, "Do that again; and I'll throw your arrow in the black.... again!"

I've tried teaching my bows to shoot but it didn't go well - now we just go out together as mates on the weekend and hope we don't do anything too embarrassing :)

So, you are equal partners in the art of archery, yes?

In the partnership I have with my bow; I let it be known that Ipull the strings!!! Not some machine!
My bow lets me know that I don't do it right.

How are you finding the increase in poundage? I?ve been shooting a 40lb recurve for a few years and have just bought a 50lb longbow (coincidentally also from Pip Bickerstaffe). I?m still in the process of making the arrows for it but I?m a little concerned about the increase in draw weight. The fact that I have just also renewed my gym membership is a total coincidence. Really ;p

You should be ok Tim, as the bow will be no weight to hold in comparison as well as not holding to full draw for as long at 10lb draw increase shouldn't be much of an issue.

Good to hear. I'm itching to get my longbow out, but trying to juggle fatherhood, arrow making, Christmas tree making and full time work is something of an art...abstract art that when you look at it, it makes you think WTF??? :p
