Perhaps it's because they get a gentler start from a compound than a longbow.

    Well said Geoff.
And of course, what did they shoot from the first compounds?....

Those first compounds are a world away from a modern compound. modern compounds ramp up to very high poundage fast, they have to, to get the speeds required. not such a gentle start.

The let-off, by definition will give a gentler start than if you were holding the peak weight at full draw.

You are making the assumption that a finger loose dumps the full peak draw weight instantly, that is not the case. the fingers are brushed aside as they open and the string slips around them only when the string completely clears the fingers is the full draw weight applied to the arrow, that draw weight usually being considerably less than 60lbs.
In approximately the same amount of travel (maybe a little more) the compound draw weight will go from 18 lbs to 60lbs . Not so gentle.
The most dangerous thing is the archers paradox of a release aid shot bow what there is of it is in the vertical plane which causes damaged arrows to break in such a manner as to drive the broken arrow into the arm of the archer. This damage can occur as arrows hit each other when hitting the boss. Other times it's a flaw in the grain of the wood that causes failure.
