    Cool First Homemade Bow

Ive recently decided that i want to have a try at making my own longbow. Not intending to get it right first time, so i was wondering if anyone has any ideas for wood that will be good for practicing making a longbow.
what im looking for is cheap wood that would be easily available, and wood that would be a good wood to start on.

    any advice is welcome

Hi, Ash is pretty cheap and readily available at most woodyards, it makes a pretty good longbow as long as you've got a bit with nice straight grain and growth rings that aren't too wide.

Alanesq, a member of this forum has made a good few bows from ash, up to 120# draw weight, and a laminate of ash and oak that was 160# (he later took it down to around 140#)!

He has a very good website, with part of it all about his experiences with the longbow, here's a link: Alan Blackham's Homepage

He also wrote a guide to making your own longbow, which is very useful indeed, another link: http://www.alanesq.com/The-Back-Street-Bowyer.pdf
