    A guide to what not to do when taking up compound archery

    1: Don't think being fit and strong will help much; you'll just assume you can "pull more than that old/chunky/skinny/whatever bloke" and overdo your starting pull draw weight. Just think of the sprinter assuming he's good at distance running and keeling over after a mile.
    2: Don't think having a few quid to throw at kit will make things better. As long as you have the basics, it's ALL about form. My only genuinely "essential" upgrade was lighter arrows to shoot further. The rest didn't help much.
    3: Don't think if you don't get target panic, you won't get it - it can grab you are the most unexpected moment and it won't let go without a serious bit of work.
    4: DO Stick to wrist releases until you're are more than competent. They are more "secure" and don't amplify mild target panic.
    5: Don't push yourself too hard - emphasise enjoyment over results. Some progress fast but that can actually be a problem later on in your shooting "career." Take it easy and slowly; give yourself a couple of years to get the hang of it, not a couple of months. Even if you get off to what seems like a flying start, some processes take far longer to grasp. Lay solid foundations or your building will fall down.
    6: Do realise archery is an up and down curve - generally it goes up but there will be troughs too.
    7: If it's getting frustrating, take a break. Your kit won't dissolve or crumble, you can pick it up five years later and it'll be fine (as long as you store it well).
    8: Mind your shoulder and back - a niggle will soon turn into a serious issue when repeatedly pulling 30, 40, 50 or even 60 pounds. If you're suffering, take a break, get some physio, warm up before each session before shooting. It's quite a workout and it's quite uneven. Also don't try archery after any heavy upper body exercise - weights, surfing, whatever.
    9: Don't take it too seriously; it's meant to be fun.
    10: Don't make lists.

    I don't agree with the wrist strap release aid item, though.

    Ben, I think that is a very important post.
    Learning, and making mistakes, seem to go hand in hand. Think about learning to ride a bike and how often we fall off before we get it right.
    My view is that making mistakes isn't such a bad thing, so long as we use the experience to do a better job next time.
    Making mistakes helps us to realise what is important and helps us see the bigger picture.
    Like Al Henderson says; "Every problem is an opportunity for improvement". If we can see our mistakes as part of the learning process; and not a reason to get annoyed or frustrated, we are much more likely to make progress.

    Geoff, a wrist release is about as much good to you as a hand held release is to Matt
