Thanks, that gives me something to play with.
Out of interest I have used the crystal palace website to calculate my handicap for the last 4 evenings and it gives me this table:
date distance target ends arrow score handicap
    27/06/19 40yds 122cm 11 2016 407 62
    02/07/19 45yds 122cm 8 2016 333 55
    04/07/19 20m 80cm 10 2016 482 56
    09/07/19 40yds 122cm 16 2016 718 54
I find that useful for a few reasons:
    1) On the 4th I shot at 20m and was pleased with myself because groups were tight enough that I was constantly hitting arrows. But looking at the handicap I was no better than the rounds before and after which were at longer distances.
    2) Apart from the first round, the handicaps are pretty much the same although my grouping has definitely improved. Which I guess shows the limitation of using score to gauge progress.
    3) There is a significant improvement after the first round. I would like to say this is my shooting but actually the first round is with a club bow and the rest with my own so it is really nothing to do with me I suppose it does at least help justify spending lots of money on my own kit though

I guess bottom line is that this is interesting to track and I will probably keep scoring to do so but when I am actually shooting I think I need to concentrate on grouping and form.

Thanks everyone for your comments, it has been very useful!

Yup. Concentrate on form (grouping should follow from that). The changes in handicap scores can give you incentive when you see it gradually drop.

I spent two years shooting with badform, although my scores were good and I had reasonable success in comps I knewI could do better.
This year I spent 2 months working onform, to start with the scores dropped, by quite a lot, I nearly went back tomy old style but in the end I stuck it out.
Now my scores slowly increased and I’mnow shooting better than ever.
So look at form now, not later.

My suggestion is to get some video of yourself shooting. Mobile phone, digital camera, whatever.
Film yourself from the shooting line (infront and behind) and from behind the shooting line looking towards the target.
Compare what you see to a top archer.
Then pick one thing to work on.
    A good coach helps too

We have some good coaches at the club so I have no shortage of things to work on.
but there is a good point there that I have missed. I need to start with basics again and work though things one at a time.

Shoot each arrow the best you can and your scores/badges/classifications will look after themselves.
