not heard of this before but I would ask if it is a blanket refusal of all GMB applications or just the one? If it is the latter, could it be for the greater good ie consistency, team spirit, primo donna behaviour etc, ? Prima donna behaviour has caused people to be dropped from teams of all sorts. As I do not know who this concerns, this is pure speculation.

Yorkshire don't - they want to field a team that wins!!!

Submit your scores & if you are in the top 3... you're in

I'm not knocking the people I have to pick our county team from but I'd love to have a GMB in the county.

DNAA don't

Durham & Northumberland don't refuse GMBs (As far as I know). I don't think we've got any at the moment!
All the selection commitee asks is that you're BM or above & have shot Yorks or FITAs in an open tournament during the current season.
You submit your best scores & they select the best 3 or 4 to make up the team.
Why would anyone want to stop a GMB shooting for their team?
At the last Northern Counties, 5 counties tournament (3 weeks ago), Cumbria had Alan Wills, Lancashire had Vlada Priestman, Cheshire had Roy Nash, etc, etc, etc. Surely they're GMBs?

In Lincolnshire it is totally based on scores submitted and availability and the teams are open to everyone. I think in Lincs we have archery_mum + 2 other GMB's (1 who may not be shooting at the moment) The team manager has to balance scores with availability and its often the availability which is the over riding factor.

I thought we'd got archery_mum and 4 other GMBs, one who I dont think is shooting at the mo, one who is always far too busy doing more important stuff, one who wont shoot on the county team on principal and geoff:stirthepo.

I also disagree about the "totally based on scores" bit. The truth is nearer to:
1.(anyone) who applies
2.who Kay picks, whether they applied or not
In 2, those who didnt apply fall into 2 categories (a) those who didnt want to apply but Kay badgers into it and (b) those who didnt apply but should have and in Kay's opinion shoot better than those who did apply.

Thats internal politics for you :muted:

Geoff I believe is an MB although last year he did not qualify for the masters (shot this year), one not shooting much didn't submit scores and/or shoot enough so didn't get his GMB. And is one no longer affiliated through Lincolnshire ?

I (think I) know who NDY means (they made it this time round)

The case we've got is that someone who isn't actually running the squad was picking the squad members, and then passing that list onto the people running the actual Squad, and i have a feeling this is why i was orrginally told to get stuffed (though it was slightly less blunt than that) and then i got an email saying "Yeah.. you're on the squad" at the start of the week. (Though i notice that there is a GMB(?) or at least MB compound archer on the squad this year)

Shropshire don't stop GMB archers shooting; hell we need all the help we can get :raspberry
I think NDY's point is not that Wales don't select GMB's for the team, but they don't / haven't been selecting GMB's for the development squad.

I suppose the philosophy they have is that squads are to help archers improve, and GMB archers are already good enough!

This is complete rubbish in my opinion, squads should be run to help any good archer improve, they are run for the benefit of not just the archers, but for improving the standard in the county, region and ultimately the country.

They would also be missing out on the advice and experience an archer who has reached GMB level could give to fellow squad members.

My county (Cheshire) is running development squads for the first time this year (as far as I know). And I know that there are GMB archers who have been invited, myself included.

In Leics & Rutland, we have qualifying matches at the start of the year and the highest scores from those matches are on the team for the first match if they want in, but there is a rule that states GMB's can get automatic acceptance without qualifying if they want.

After the first match it is based on scores submitted.

The last couple of years I have somehow managed to get my MB... I have a long term goal of reaching GMB one day, and am working on improving my shooting towards that end - it's a gradual thing. I see myself as a keen amateur archer, and always enjoy shooting for the county when selected, and am always proud to do so. I think it would be a poor thing, if when in the future I get to GMB standard, my County then rewards my efforts by exclusion from the county team. As has already been pointed out, there is no regional level to move on to (perhaps there should be) and at that point I would not necessarily be ready to shoot for GB! I am glad that Lincolnshire doesn't do this therefore!

I think the way Kay selects the team is as fair as it could be given the circumstances. She always asks for scores to be submitted (which I always do) and selects initially on that basis. Sadly, we are sometimes still short of a full picnic at this point, and then she has no choice but to cajole a few likely candidates into shooting, but I think she still tries to be fair.

Being a GMB myself, it would be nice to be thought about as archers who are always looking to improve themselves an would relish going to a squad session if time allowed. But in general, people tend to think of us as either prima donnas, or being of a standard too high to attend a squad. I don't mind having an invite to a County Squad, as it still training. The more the better in my opinion!

But here is a thought for the team managers of the counties running training squads, How about you actually invite the GMB's to the squads to actually help train the other archers? They have far more experience than 90% of the coaches in the country, Why not utilize this knowledge?

Do you mean being elitist?? :stirthepo lol

I think it would be beneficial all round if GMB archers attended.. there is also the idea of meeting fellow team members and forming that relationship away from the competition!
