Longbow - 3 Gold End

So we’ve been shooting back at club since AGB let us play again post lockdown and we've mostly stuck to 40 & 50yds to maximise target numbers and accommodate lots of members.

Yesterday the forecast rain and wind put off all but the hardiest (or daftest) souls from showing up and with reduced numbers we put up multiple bosses for each of us to shoot long distance full rounds - first time this year for me with longbow as I recurve over winter.

Elected to shoot a New National - conditions were overcast with a changeable, at times gusting, breeze but mild enough for t-shirts.

I had the round of my life !!!

Found the right bit of tree for my aiming point at 100yds, achieved 3rd class on my 1st end, steady hit rate to the 7th end where two in the gold told me I was doing really well plus I’d gained Bowman score.

First two ends at 80yds always a blip for me as I readjust aim point but my third end was the big one - the walk to the target was exciting but those three sticks in the custard were a wonderful sight.

Think I may have battered the club record too for the round. 😁

Just need to wait for a nice shiny badge now.

Here’s a link to a pic - wish I could work out how to put actual images on my posts

Great shooting.(y)(y)(y)😎👏👏 I used to shoot compound where 6 are common. Going to barebow changed my view of this achievement entirely. Longbow must be near impossible. I've only seen one person, Clinton Hill, shoot more than one. Images... I think you can just paste images straight into AI now. As long as they are not too big.

Great achievement. Yes I used to watch Clinton Hill in awe, but he was in a class of his own with a longbow. I did this a couple of times indoors, 3 compounders 10s (I believe KidCurry was on the next boss when i shot this one). Far more satisfying than a 6 gold end with the recurve or compound.

I‘ve had 4 & 5 gold ends with recurve out at 100yds but yesterday was just one of those days when it all clicked.

Punished by the wind if I didn’t concentrate - higher than the top of our boundary tree line and the arrows were dancing down range as the wind whipped them around - but the ones in the sweet spot were bang on.

I had hoped to go for MB this year by doing a few record status shoots - if I was on this form consistently and we hadn’t been battered by COVID then who knows what could have been but I am more than satisfied with this.

I think AGB acknowledge the difficulty/rarity of this by allowing Longbow a 3 Gold End award whilst other disciplines can only claim 6 Gold End awards.

Just one of those days - almost made a total mess of the last end as I was way too pumped up 😂

I watch Cliff Gadd shoot and he’s in a class of his own - at the county invitational last year he won Longbow class on 930’ish (144 hits) with 2nd place scoring 630’ish 😱 went on to win the nationals a few weeks later. A true joy to watch but heartbreaking to shoot against 😁

Yes when Clinton stopped shooting Cliff took over his mantle, I did beat him a couple of times indoors, but couldn't get near him outdoors. We both made longbows so we used to talk a lot about bow making.

'That's very nice corax67. Congratulations. Makes it worth the wait.
I was shooting with Clinton at Dover castle some 10 years back at 80yds when he shot 5 x 9s and a 7. It was embarrassing.

I'm still in awe over Karl's feat. 3 gold at that range with a longbow! I shoot a 50# flatbow with a shelf, and have never had 3 gold @ 100 yds. You have golden hands.
Think it happened because I wasn’t trying - just a gentle club day with no great expectations. Definitely the way to go.
