Riser Contact

I've been shooting a DAS Dalaa that I got for a really good price a couple of years ago.

I had Border CXBs on it for a little while then Border 7.2s for ages (until they delaminated). It always shot fine, tuning with little effort, even though I just used a cheap stick on rest with no button.

I've since got some CV9s that I'm really struggling with; I'm getting occasional fletching to shelf contact that is really messing up arrow flight.

It seems to be a combination that is really finicky to tune; I had to put a decent rest and button on it to make things easier.

Now, the Dalaa is not a riser with a lot of clearance. It's cut past centre but not by a lot, plus there's an annoying hump on the shelf that's supposed to make life easier for shelf shooters. It's this that is giving me the contact.

Bareshaft tuning seems to be behaving properly; I can get the bareshaft to group and I can move the arrows around the target with poundage and button settings as I'd expect.

Does anyone have any ideas before I give up and go back to my old Bernardini Mamba with the huge sight window?

Two ideas that I have had are nock height and tiller.
  • I have my nock height set to 3/8"
  • I have my tiller set to +2mm
Sorry about the mixed units; I was born in the '60s.

My nock height doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

My rule of thumb has always been: 3 under 0-3mm, Split 3-6mm. I'm shooting 3 under. But, I've seen people claiming that you shouldn't be afraid to go negative tiller for 3 under.

Anyone?

I’d have a play around with the tiller and nock height - after checking alignment. Could you get someone to video you shooting to see that the ‘big hook timing’ is spot on?

Yes, tiller, nock height and grip position. If you occasionally push into the heel of your hand it'll upset the limb timing, and change where the np is in relation to your shelf.

Hmmmm. I wonder if that's why I sometimes spend hours chasing a good tiller setting? And why a good tiller setting one day seems awful the next?

Could well be. Spend a bit of time focussing on that and see what you get. The CV9s like a high grip which enables the big hooks to have good timing - you are pushing close to the arrow rest and centre of the bow which is easier and more consistent to balance.

Yes, it looks like I have a problem with my grip. Well done 👍. Sometimes I'm heeling the grip and sometimes I'm choking right up into the top of the grip with only light heel contact. This is actually causing a really significant amount of vertical arrow impact variation and so really needs fixed.

The grip is supposed to be a super-duper Jager grip that is meant to solve all the world's ills. I'll need to figure out if I just need to get used to it and work out my failings with practice or whether it just doesn't suit.

Well, one problem at a time!
Which Jager do you have? All of them require you to use them correctly and consistently. I'm still in love with my Best 1 high, although RCore has just made me something better.

The grip you have permits a correct hand position, you just aren't getting it every time. I have used silicone door stops - the self-adhesive kind, although the self-adhesive bit is rubbish - to give me a reference I can feel for where my hand should, or should not go. ie, if I can feel this bump with my thumb this is good, if I can feel this bump with my palm, this is bad. Worth a go?

Well, there's a good question. The grip that I have is the one that was fitted when I bought the riser second hand.

These are the main options for the Dalaa:

None of the angles seem quite right but that's probably just the photo angles. The consensus is that it's probably mk1 high grip.

At the end of shooting last night I'd decided that the steepness/highness of the grip was making it really easy to switch between being heeling or choking the grip, or getting the pressure even, with just a tiny change of up/down wrist flex.

Oh, and I think that it is all the same issue as I'm not getting the riser contact when I get the palm pressure right.

No, that's not a high, I think that is a low or a medium, but it looks from here (peering through specs) like a low.

Hmmm, not sure. It's not a 2.0 as it doesn't have the extra contouring. I don't think that it's a standard or low as it doesn't have the waviness to the bottom edge. And it's not an extra low as it doesn't have the notch below the shelf. Which only leaves the high. But it doesn't look close enough to the picture of that to convince me either.

Where's my monocle?

Well that was weird...

Many years ago I had a Bernardini Luxor. Ultimately I decided that it wasn't for me but at one point I ordered a Jager grip for it. The first grip that arrived didn't fit the Luxor; Paul Jaeger said he didn't know what the grip fitted and to just keep it and meanwhile he supplied the correct grip.

Anyway, many years later, I'm struggling with the grip on my Dalaa, contemplating buying a new one, but feeling overwhelmed at the options available, and wondering if I should just sell the Dalaa and move on.

But then, thinks I, I've got a Jager grip somewhere in my box of bits. Wouldn't it be weird if it fit the Dalaa?

What are the chances of that?

It seems to be similar to what 3rivers call a 2.0 standard. Anyway, it's not as high and has a chamfer on the bottom left edge, and generally feels much less fat in the hand. I shot it for a while today and while it didn't fix everything I seemed to get on with it much better.

I don't know whether it encouraged better hand position or wasn't punishing my mistakes as much, but my results were much more encouraging.
