AGB Advice for returning to shooting 13/5/20

We don't start back until next Saturday. It was decided that WA30 WA50 WA70 will be the rounds, no moving of targets will be done, and you book the distance you will be doing 2 days before. Only the field team will setup, and it would be a pain if they then had to start moving bosses around for people, as they will already be doing the work to get them shooting and would impact on others shooting. i agree with Geoff, don't have to be doing a round, just get out and enjoy the shooting in a safe manner is all we want.

One of the field team attended site Friday to spray a set of 12 bosses, stands and tie-downs with an IPA based disinfectant, these were used Saturday. Other than that we followed everything in my post and it went really smoothly.

Only having targets at 50yds & 30yds - as requested by members - did make the whole set up/take down process smooth and easy.

Why did you need to disinfect your bosses?
Has someone been using them in the last few weeks?
Surely the virus can only survive on surfaces for at most a few days, so they couldnt be disease laden could they?
Surely the only time the bosses needed sanitising was after someone had touched them, and they didnt really need that, as long as everyone who touches them sanitises their hands AFTERWARDS.

They didn’t need to but they took it upon themselves to do so - they will also be doing it from here on in until archery returns to the old normal.

In reality as we only shoot on a Saturday and the virus only remains live for around 72 hrs on hard surfaces then we don’t need to have individual faces & pins, etc but to keep everyone safe we are adopting all the AGB guidelines.

Thank you. That’s much appreciated and very helpful.

KidCurry, I think too much emphasis can be given to shooting rounds " like we normally do" and too little on the fact that these are not normal times. Surely a group of archers could make life easier for all those who have to set up by having things as simple as possible.
Shooting arrows does not have to mean shooting rounds.
Geoff, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been banging my head against a wall trying to explain to our club committee that if/when we return to shooting we shouldn’t be trying to arrange an “as normal” shooting session. I absolutely cannot see the point of people shooting rounds. We should be opening the club merely for people to have the simple opportunity of shooting arrows again. We’re a small club with room for five bosses across the range, allowing for AGB’s spacing guidelines, so archers trying to shoot a recognised round will only reduce the number of archers who get the chance to shoot within the time scale allowed.

I'm just thinking about how expensive alcohol sanitiser is and how much you would have to spray on a boss

We have access to IPA based liquid sanitising spray fluids - not gels - in industrial quantities (if required) and funds to cover their purchase so the decision was made to go down this route.

Please make sure all club members are made aware of the flammable properties of IPA.

We've sent out a return to shooting memo (via email), attached to this are the DATA sheets for all chemicals that are supplied, members have to reply confirming they have read, understood, and will follow all control measures that have been put in place, they have also been advised that if they are allergic to any of the chemicals they are not to shoot.

That's good thinking.

Blimey, that could be a lot of IPA.

Please, please be careful spraying IPA and make sure it's outdoors. It has a low flash point (around 11-13 degC and a static spark has enough energy to ignite it above that temperature. Also, you don't want to be inhaling too much of the fumes, unless you are Donald Trump of course. And I assume no one smokes!

It did occur to me that bosses/ stands could be marked with carry points or handles fitted so the archers know where not to touch.

Just wash/sanitise your hands after touching the boss/stand!
Put the boss up, sanitise your hands, put the face on. Putting the face on doesnt require you to touch the boss. Pulling your arrows out of the target only requires you to touch the target face.
I think all this ultra anti virus thinking is getting silly!

The nature of our occupations is such that we use these products on a frequent basis, we fully understand the nature of the products and their handling.

Appreciate the concern guys.

It has been suggested that we buy some full size waterproof faces. They could be sanitised and possibly left on the bosses. The archer leaving would clean it before leaving and the next user would clean it before using it; a double check in a way.

I would be surprised if IPA or bleach does not also wipe off the printing.

Whilst useful don’t forget the virus will likely be in someones lungs and transfer via breathing as well.
