What's the best way of getting even thickness Bamboo?

Thanks for the replies. I know what you mean by those splinters, they appear from nowhere and go in deep.

What's the best way of getting even thickness Bamboo?

Hi All Anyone know a good way of getting an even thickness Bamboo backing? A 7' length of bamboo is a good few mm thicker at one end to the other. With most woods you can just put them through a thicknesser a few times and you get a nice even thickness. But bamboo has nodes on the one side...

What dimensions would make a good Ash self bow?

Thanks both. I've ordered a copy of the Traditional Archer’s Handbook, and will take a look at that forum. Ash is the only wood I have found readily available at a reasonable cost. I'm still trying to find some hazel. A house I used to live in had several hazel trees in the garden, but I didn't...

What dimensions would make a good Ash self bow?

Hi All I have a piece of fairly straight grained Ash about 4" x 2" x 7' which I would like to make into one or possibly 2 bows. I was thinking probably best to make a flatbow, something along the lines of the Holmegaard bow. Mainly because if stone age man could make this I might have a...

Easy way to make a laminate bow

I'm planning on trying alanesq's method soon. Hopefully using the wood types he used if I can get hold of them. I was curious about draw weight because he mentions his being around 135lbs which is way higher than I want. I doubt if I could pull that let alone hit anything if I did :) . Are you...

How do you make Nocks from Horn

Hi All I decided to make things difficult for myself and rather than just buying ready made longbow nocks, I bought a horn so I could make them from scratch. I found the band-saw did a good job in cutting them to roughly the right size, but the next step is turning a slightly tapered rectangle...

    First attempt at tillering

I know exactly what you mean, I'm really struggling to get suitable wood at a sensible price for a beginner. I got this one as a set of two on ebay as partially made bows. They "just" need tillering and finishing. That is a big "just" though :). As I'm new to this I'm happy to take one step at a...

    First attempt at tillering

Thanks Del Most appreciated. I'll have another go getting the curve right on the weekend and let you know how I get on.

    First attempt at tillering

This is my first attempt at tillering. The bow is Ash/Greenheart/Ash laminate. It has ended up about 38lbs at 28". I think I've managed to get the whole limb beyond the handle to bend, but leaving slightly stiff tips, which I've read are a good thing. What does it look like to experts? Anything...

Thanks Skyfox I'll give it a go

Which part of the bow is it best to start tillering first?

Hi All I'm just about to start tillering and wondered where the best place to start is. Start reducing wood at the limbs and work in? Start reducing wood near the handle and work out? Start reducing wood mid limb? What would be your advice? Thanks Osprey

Which wood available in the UK would make a good bow?

Cheers Del Will do. I'll take your advice and make a few "easier" laminates first to get a bit of skill tillering, whilst keeping an eye out for some Hazel. Then test myself by making a self bow. I'll let you know how I get on. Wish me luck :)

Which wood available in the UK would make a good bow?

Hi Del Sorry if I appeared to disagree with you, that was not my intention at all. My post was intended for information and not a view point. I just wondered why so many bows (especially comercially available ones) are made of laminate so I asked someone. The reply I got certainly made sense...

Which wood available in the UK would make a good bow?

If your interested, I was given an explanation demo of the benefits of triple laminated. The demo went as follows A small stick of Lemonwood was bent. It gave no warning just suddenly snapped. A similar small stick of Hickory was bent. It creaked and groaned but did not snap until it was almost...

Which wood available in the UK would make a good bow?

Hi All Many commercially produced bows are made out of exotic hardwood which is hard to come by, and very expensive. So I was wondering. Which wood available in the UK would make a good bow? Looking at UK timber suppliers the wood available tends to be the list below. Which of these would make...

Suitable longbow woods available in the UK

Thanks Del, I am new to longbow making. I made one on a course (Hickory/Purpleheart/Lemonwood) which turned out great. But it's different without an expert standing over me. I don't want to risk super expensive woods at this time, but if I'm going to put the effort in I would like a reasonable...
