Dacron Headache

Hi guys,

It has been a while since I posted in this forum and I feel a bit guilty!

I have been having much success with my flemish twist strings using the 452X material. However, I want to start making strings in many different colours and 452X will start to get expensive!

I found a supplier of dacron (Sailing and angling shop) but they are talking about different weights and sizes of dacron. It seems to range from 80 lbs to 200 lbs. I had no idea it was that involved, I thought dacron was dacron.

I would ideally like to buy B-55 dacron as it has slightly less creep than B-50, I am told, but my question is does anyone know what poundage of dacron is recommended for string making?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldn't buy it from a sailing and angling shop. Buy from an archey specialist, why risk getting something inappropriate?
Dacron B50 was rated at 50lb per strand I believe, but it's rather stretchy.
String names are stupidly confusing and the data supplied with the string is generally non existent!

I reiterate.
Stuff sold at a chandlers may be specifically tailored for a specific purpose e.g Whipping twine etc and may be prepared with totally different characteristics. E.G. it may be braided or twisted to give extra stretch, or less stretch or to be more abrasion resistant but not so good for the shock load of a bow.

Thanks. Reason for the sailing shop is that where I am based here in South Africa, archery shops are few and far between and the shops that do stock anything have no dacron so I am forced to look at other alternatives. I'm certainly going to be very careful buying from a boat shop and make sure I'm buying single strand dacron of the right poundage! :) but thats why I made sure to ask first! I only checked the product online so will probably go to the store tomorrow and check it out in person

Hmmm, I don't like the term 'single strand'.
Bowstring Dacron is like a bunch of fine fibres lightly waxed together.
Anyhow, good luck with your search.

Most online archery companies ship worldwide. I'd stick with them personally. Just my 2p worth.
