I promised a review of the KG Vertex carbon riser I just purchased. The box arrived and I opened it to find just the riser in its sleeve. No instructions! No allen keys - nothing. I messaged KG and told them that considering the cost I paid for this riser they could have at least included a sheet of A4 printed with some guidence on it and a couple of suitable allen keys! No reply! I could not find any reference to the Vertex on their web site - so I went by their KG XCR as a starting point.
I was pleased to see that the riser has been machined out of a block of carbon fibre - no internal metal frames - no 'balloon technology'. The weight was slightly lower than quoted - which suited me. In fact it is only about 80grams heavier than the Krossen Xenia riser I have been using to rest my bow shoulder. The grip is quite rounded and I found that when shooting my hand slid up into the throat of the grip. I fitted a strip of anti-slip sandpaper and that cured that.
I am aware of possible variations in setup caused by mixing brands. Initially I set the brace height at 225mm - recommended by Uukha for 70" bow. The bow did not like that one bit. I checked on the KG site and checked the brace using the back of the bow reference - it gave me a brace of 11", as opposed to 9 1/4" - 10" recommended for this riser (KG XCR dimensions). So I untwisted the string to bring the brace down (still too high) - the bow shot a little better. I made another string with increased length to get a brace recommended (9/14") by KG site. The bow shot much better. I am still in the process of finding the best brace for this riser. I have no problem holding this bow and it is more stable when aiming than the Xenia. I like this riser. The finish is excellent as is the design.
One surprising experience I have found. Initially I had #28 long limbs fitted, but found I could easily draw these limbs even with the tiller bolts wound full in! So out of curiosity I fitted my Uukha medium #32 limbs (I made another string), expecting a problem drawing them as when they were fitted to the Xenia. What a surprise. I could draw them with the limbs bolts only part way out! That is why I withdrew these limbs from the for sale section. So now I am in the process of tuning this new setup. Rain has stopped play, and I have a house full of water, so it will be a while before I can shoot again and continue to 'play' with this bow.
