After wondering where her archery career was going to go last year after failing to make national team (but back on this year), she stamped her authority at the Universiade Games today but putting down a 686 FITA 720 round during the ranking event and taking the world record that's stood for over 10 years! :jaw-dropp:D

The team record also fell with a staggering 2038 with team mates CHOI Misun and KANG Chae Young.

it's quite scary at the depth of archery at the elite level in Korea... though I am surprised it was a 10 year record!

Seems a bit of a "shooting fish in a barrel" situation with essentially the Korean national squad on home turf.
Like the website design..

Hehe, yeah it is rather.

Korea are in 9 out of the 10 Gold medal matches .... :eye-poppi

Does anyone know how the senior Korean recurve squad have time to study at university and be full time professional athletes?

A full time and probably unlimited bursary and a guaranteed job at the end of it will be helping ... ;)

I can think of a few UK student archers who concentrated too much on the shooting and subsequently weren't students for the full length of their expected time in education! ;)

Given that the Koreans (and Mexicans) have the longest working weeks of any country, perhaps they just have longer active days too. Apart from a potentially superior work ethic, they would also arrive at Uni at a much higher level than their UK equivalents.

The school hours in Korea are also the longest in the world... and the suicide rate is the highest in the developed world.

Surprised to see Greece so high up that list above, given recent news. (I know that's not the root of the current problems).

Yes, and Germany so low. Someone is doing something right! Smarter not harder? Or just lies, damned lies & statistics.
I was aware of the suicide figures. Not uncommon in competitive education countries but there is no doubt that they pay a high price for their success.

German economic strength: The secrets of success - BBC News

I love seeing how other countries make things work. It's depressing, mind. :)

A lot of Olympic sports in Germany are associated with and/or funded by the armed forces - I know the current successful recurve women's team are all army. Have an auto-translated read of:

Yes and not just Germany (who adopt east Germany sports model), but most east European countries have strong sport army teams.

At least one of the Italian gold medallists in 2012 (Galiazzo) was serving in the military. His team mate Nespoli is a university student (I think).

There are WRS events nearly every weekend in the UK as all Star Status events are. They just need the rules followed - nothing special :) I'm surprised some world sports bodies don't count the student games.

Probably deserving of its own thread but anyway...

Not to be outdone by Miss Bae, Kim Kyung-eun broke the 11 year old 50m distance record this weekend and put it up to a staggering 351!
