Recurve stabiliser holes (well, screw...)

Evening all!

So this isn't about stabilisers as I shoot bare bow but more about the screw hole itself. Basically I've got a wrist strap coming and wanted to attach it to the bow (using what would be the long rod hole by the grip). I've put 1/2 inch screw (of the correct size) to the hole and discovered it only goes in 3/16 of an inch (5mm) before it's too tight to proceed. My question is: is there a specific type of screw used for this? And I assume stabilisers go further than that, right?

Up to now, I've never needed to use the holes as I haven't used a stabiliser but I find it a little odd. I've included a pic - the white taped off area is to as far as it screws in.

Thanks for any advice or info people can shoot my way! IMG_1459.jpg

It's not a 1/2". I think it's a 5/8 UNC. Shoving the wrong one in will strip the threads.

I'd guess that you have a metric bolt rather than an imperial one. The bolt will start to screw in but as the thread pitches are different it will bind after a few turns.

I'm sorry to say that is a foreign language to me

I have a store store close by so I will pop over and try the metric / imperial joy!

If the store doesn't help much - Is it the same as the pressure buttons? If so a bolt for a wrap around would fit.

Or something like a quick release for a long rod as they generally have a bolt to hold them in.

Information on thread forms could fill a book, and often has, but basically.........

UNF / UNC are imperial thread forms used by the US, and by the UK before they metricated.

Metric (M6, M8, M10 etc) are, well, metric and are used by the rest of the world and by the UK since they metricated.

As well as the bolt shanks being in metric vs. imperial sizes, the threads vary in shape and pitch too.

Is by a local store you mean B&Q or Homebase then you are probably out of luck as their knowledge of bolts usually finishes with which aisle they are piled up on. They stock is usually almost exclusively metric, too.

You'd stand a better chance at a machine shop, or maybe a car specialist that deals with classic British or American cars.

Failing that, it's mail order. Ebay's usually good as you can get small quantities without the P&P being extortionate, and you can get stainless and fancy heads too.

Morning all.

Thank for the advice and information! The local shop is an old school hardware shop (the owner was around before the conversion I think), it was a gamble but they didn't have one anyway. After a discussion with Merlin (I have an order coming up soon) they informed me it was a 5/16 UNF bolt. I have included it in my order. Thanks again for the info.

Why not just tie/clip/buckle it through the riser cutout below the grip.
Personally I'd be tempted by a shoelace if I was going down the BB route. A couple of loops to stop the bow jumping and the remaining three fingers can hold onto the excess - voila almost perfect hand placement.

The honest answer is vanity. Sounds really silly, but I like nicely designed things (as a side line, I'm already in the process of picking out my fletchings, wrap and nock colours for the wooden set of arrows I'm yet to acquire to accompany the one piece traditional recurve that I'm yet to afford). I got a screw - get this - I found a seller on ebay that was selling the correct one for something like ?1.50 inc P&P for 5. I sent through a message asking how much for one, they replied 10p (inc P&P). When it arrived, I had 5 and all I paid was 10p (inc P&P!!!). Some form of loss leader on their part but I consider that a bargain!

I must admit I like the straps that bolt to the riser too. I've tried all the rest and I find the bolt on ones the best for comfort, confidence and ease of use.

Fair enough. Must admit to being a bit of an arrow pimp - I do like them to stand out. At the moment they're GT velocities with Fluo yellow wraps with Orange and Yellow tiger stripe blazers, Clear orange nocks and red nock collars. If you want some great wraps but don't want to pay top dollar go to MDP supplies on the trading est.up the back of Merry Hill ( exact address on google ) and buy a meter of the stuff for a couple of quid. I just get the thinnest car/poster vinyl in whichever colour - Orocal or similar. The guy at the trade counter is ace when you tell him what you want it for as some isn't flexible enough.
They even do printable A4 sheets.
