It was a common mistake, still perpetrated, to think you could read the tea leaves in the the pattern, and somehow, magically, determine whether button tension or position was to be adjusted. Trouble was, depending on which set of instructions you followed, the divination was exactly opposite!
And both worked.
You even saw declarations along the lines of "if it's a zig zag, do this". Nonsense.
Truth is, the noise in the patterns generally makes determining anything other than a general direction a bit iffy in any case. And the pressure/position of a button are interrelated, so change whichever one you find effective...
